I just read a story about a man who stood out so much, he amazed Jesus, who went on to say about him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”

What kind of man could bring about such praise from the Son of God? A humble, faith-filled warrior.

Luke 7 tells the story of the Roman Centurion whose servant, “whom his master valued highly”, was so sick he was about to die. The Centurion sent his messengers to plead with Jesus to heal the servant. Elders of the Jews, not normally fans of Romans, who knew this soldier told Jesus, “This man deserves to have you do this.”

On the way to his home, Jesus met friends of the Centurion who passed on the soldier’s message: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself…I do not deserve to have you come…I do not even consider myself worthy.” Stunning humility for a man of such authority.

Then this soldier demonstrates his familiarity with power, and ascribes the same power to Jesus: “I tell this one Go, and he goes; and that one Come, and he comes. I say to my servant Do this, and he does it…But say the word, and my servant will be healed.”

“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him.” The Centurion had unwavering faith in the power of the Jesus to command laws of nature as easily as he commanded his soldiers under him. With one simple word.

This was a warrior of significant power, yet what shocked Jesus was his faith; and what stood out to others was his character. What an example of humility and integrity in a man of authority.

I’d like to be like him.
